Solid wood worktops require regular oiling, typically every three to six months, to maintain their moisture resistance and appearance. Use a food-safe worktop oil, applied thinly and buffed in. Avoid leaving standing water, and always seal around the sink with appropriate sealant. A well-maintained wood worktop is highly durable and can be sanded and re-oiled if scratched or stained.

Engineered quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing, it was manufactured with a resin binder that makes it stain-resistant by nature. Natural granite, by contrast, is porous and should be sealed on installation and periodically thereafter. Your fitter or stone fabricator should advise on the specific maintenance requirements of your chosen material.

You should avoid cutting directly on any kitchen worktop. On laminate, knives leave visible cuts that harbour bacteria. On wood, cuts go through the protective oil layer. On quartz and granite, very hard or serrated knives can scratch the surface. Use a chopping board in all cases to protect the worktop and maintain hygiene.

Small chips in quartz can be repaired using a colour-matched resin filler applied by a specialist stone repair technician. The repair is usually not completely invisible but is significantly less obvious than the chip itself. For structural damage, a section of worktop may need to be replaced, again a job for the original stone fabricator or an experienced specialist.
